Keyhole Surgery

Our Veterinary Centre in West Kirby are offering keyhole surgery for dogs and cats for procedures such as neutering

We at Acorn always strive to offer the highest levels of patient care and this is the latest tool we have available to us to maximise this.

What is keyhole surgery?

In many conventional procedures, a large incision is made to allow the surgeon good visualisation and handling. Laparoscopic or ‘keyhole’ surgery involves making two or three very small entry points into the abdomen to allow a camera (just 5mm-10mm in diameter) and instruments to be introduced to perform the necessary procedure. The advantages of this include:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Quicker return to full activity
  • Reduced post-operative discomfort
  • Smaller wound
  • Shorter anaesthetic time for some procedures

What procedures can be performed by keyhole?

Many commonly performed procedures can be performed laparoscopically, these include:

  • Ovariectomy or “spaying” in dogs – removal of the ovaries for neutering
  • Cryptorchidectomy – removal of undescended testicles within the abdomen
  • Biopsies of the liver or pancreas
  • Exploration of the abdomen
  • Gastropexy – for prevention of a twisted stomach
  • Cystotomy – exploration of the bladder

Whilst keyhole surgery is nowhere near as invasive as conventional surgery your pet will receive appropriate pain relief, before, during and after the procedure.
